Academia Cotopaxi

Principal's Welcome

Dear Parents,

Welcome to another exciting school year at Academia Cotopaxi!

The aim of Academia Cotopaxi is to create a caring, learning environment for your children as well as inspire them to become global citizens. We hope to foster and encourage creativity, a spirit of inquiry, and the freedom to express and share ideas through a wide variety of program offerings. In all areas of our curriculum and disciplinary procedures, we adhere to our core values.

At Academia Cotopaxi we offer a program of study from Grade 3 to Grade 8 and we are also a fully authorized International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (IBO PYP) school. In Grade 3 to Grade 5, students learn through our PYP Units of Inquiry and are encouraged to formulate questions about the unit they will be studying. Your children will come home excited about finding the answers to their inquiry questions! Students at this level also follow a core Language Arts and Math program. Grades 6-8 have elements of the program such as the core values, an inquiry approach to learning, the IB student learner profiles and attitudes and the IBO mission statement which drives our curriculum in general from PK-G12. Students in Grades 6 through 8 work with core teachers for the Humanities (Language Arts and Social Studies), Math and Science, Drama, Art, Music, and PE. Technology and Spanish are also an important part of the Academia Cotopaxi curriculum.  Students in Grades 6-8 also engage in community service projects and advisory/mentor classes called “Cougar Time”.

Your child’s homeroom and mentor teacher will be able to provide you with details of the programs of study through regular updates. There are also opportunities for communication through back-to-school nights, parent/teacher conferences and student-led conferences posted on the Academia Cotopaxi Calendar. Please read the calendar carefully together with the weekly divisional newsletter which is updated and posted on the school’s website.

I look forward to meeting you and your child this academic year and I want to take this opportunity to wish you and your child a very successful school year!
