Admissions guidelines


Students who fall into certain categories, including but not limited to the following, may be excluded by the Director:

  • Students who require a significant modification of Academia Cotopaxi's instructional program and/or students who have educational disabilities that require service not provided by Academia Cotopaxi.
  • Students demonstrating a lack of interest or effort, persistent behavior problems, or failure to maintain a satisfactory grade average.
  • Students whose records and/or admissions screening results indicate deficiency in the first language.
  • Students who do not adhere to the policies, rules, regulations and Student Discipline Code of Academia Cotopaxi

 

In addition, Academia Cotopaxi reserves the right to deny admission to students when one or more of the below are present:

  • Information on application form is either incomplete or inaccurate
  • The student does not meet age entrance requirements
  • Academic records indicate below average performance
  • Admissions testing results indicate performance at more than 6 months below grade level mark for native English speakers or those who have attended English speaking schools for four or more years
  • Admissions testing results indicate performance below grade level for Spanish speaking students coming from Spanish-based schools
  • The student has been expelled from previous school
  • The student presents disciplinary/behavior concerns that could not be met by the school personnel and resources
  • The school's program cannot meet the English as a Second Language needs of the students as these are assessed by the school.
  • Student's needs exceed mild special education services for Learning Differences
  • Student requires services in both special education and ESL
  • The student requires additional services that the school cannot provide and these are not accessible by parents through outside resources
  • The student does not demonstrate that he/she is completely toilet-trained
  • The parent/guardian will not be involved in the child's education
  • There are no spaces available based on the school's maximum class size and international balance*

* According to the school's US Government Grant guidelines, the school shall accept all qualified dependents of US Government direct-hire personnel

 

English language proficiency requirements:

There are no English language proficiency requirements for students from pre-school through 7 th grade. Students must demonstrate at or above grade level performance in their native language in order to be admitted.

ESL students entering 8 th and 9 th grade must demonstrate no more than 2 years below grade level of English language proficiency.

Students entering 10 th grade and above must demonstrate no more than 6 months below grade level of language proficiency.

 

Age requirements:


Admission to Pre-school (3 & 4 year olds)

Students must be three (3) years of age or (4) years of age on or before October 1 of the year of entrance

Admission to Kindergarten

In order to qualify for entrance into Kindergarten, a student must be five (5) years of age on or before October 1 of the year of entrance

Admission to First Grade

In order to qualify for entrance into First Grade, a student must be six (6) years of age on or before October 1 of the year of entrance.

Admission to Grades 2-12:

Beginning in 2 nd grade, students who have completed grade level could be considered in order for a new student to enter a grade at a different age than that of his/her peers. The following is the regular age level for the different grades:

4 9 10 15
5 10 11 16
6 11 12 17
7 12    

Maximum age guideline: In order to qualify for entrance, the applicant must be projected to graduate on or before the 20 th birthday.

 

Admission to Next School Division:

Admission to one school division does not guarantee admission to the next school division.

 

Part-time Students & Students on Temporary Transfer:

The school shall accept part-time or temporary transfer students only under very limited circumstances. The Admissions Committee will evaluate each case on an individual basis.
