2010 Global Citizen

2010 Global Citizen Award Recipient:  Commander Ronnie Nader

 

Academia Cotopaxi’s Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the 2010 Global Citizen Award recipient, Commander Ronnie Nader.  Commander Nader receives the award for his outstanding contribution for the betterment of humanity through his scientific work in the area of space investigation.  Commander Nader is currently the Director of the Space Operations of Ecuador’s Civil Space Agency (EXA - Agencia Espacial Civil Ecuatoriana).  He is the first Ecuadorian Astronaut and his work has impacted space investigation and advancement in Ecuador and many other countries, benefiting people all over the world.  Cotopaxi students have already been directly impacted by his work through his most recent project, which our 2nd grade hosts on the Academia Cotopaxi campus:  The first computer with direct meteorological satellite views turning the regular classroom into a local space research center!

Definition of a Global Citizen

A Global Citizen is someone who…

  • Respects the views, values and traditions of self and others (Positive Attitude). 
  • Is able to gain trust by demonstrating principled behavior (Honesty and Integrity).
  • Shows sensitivity towards the needs and feelings of others (Friendship).
  • Has a sense of personal commitment to action and service and responds to the needs of the local and global community (Leadership and Responsible Stewardship).

Definitions of the Core Values

  • Respect - showing regard for the rights and dignity of self, others and the environment.
  • Leadership - actively influencing others in a positive way for the common good.
  • Friendship - showing unselfish concern, care and empathy for others.
  • Positive Attitude - taking on challenges willingly and with confidence.
  • Honesty and Integrity - telling the truth regardless of the circumstances and consequences and staying
    true to one’s principles and being accountable for one’s actions.
  • Responsible Stewardship – responsibly managing and caring for the environment and all resources.
Global Citizen Award Selection Process

Academia Cotopaxi’s Board of Trustees will annually appoint a chair of the Award Selection Committee. Working with
the Director, the Chair will invite members of the AC community to join the committee, making sure that the committee
includes at least: one board member, one teacher, one parent, one administrator, and the president of the NHS (National
Honor Society). The members of the committee represent a balanced mix of Ecuadorians and non-Ecuadorians.

The Committee solicits nominations from the Academia Cotopaxi community establishing timelines as appropriate.
Nominations for this award may be made by anyone in the AC community. Nomination are submitted to the Committee
and remain confidential.

Selection Process: The Committee reviews the nominations, conducts research as necessary, and narrows the field to
between one and three finalists for presentation to the Board of Trustees. In addition to the criteria mentioned above:

  • Finalists should have made a significant contribution for the betterment of humanity that can be tangibly
    demonstrated;
    *  Long term commitments and demonstrated positive results would generally take priority over recent actions.
  • Finalists’ efforts should have had a recognizable impact on Ecuador
  • Finalists should demonstrate the characteristics of a “global citizen” (as defined above) in as many areas as
    possible.
  • Finalists should be able to come to Quito to receive the award.

Finalists: The Board approves the final award recipient. If more than one finalist is presented, the Board may make the
selection, or it may ask the Committee to do so.

Presentation: The award is presented in person to the recipient at a suitably public occasion during the second semester
of the school year. The recipient is expected to speak at this event. The date and time may be adjusted to fit the
schedule of the recipient.
