From the Board of Trustees

Academia Cotopaxi’s Board of Trustees has approved a new program for      students in grades K through 3. Beginning in the 2010-2011 school year, lunch will be included in the school fees for students in grades K-3.  The mandatory monthly fee for lunch will be $40.  This program allows us to reduce the daily menu price to $2.20 (over a dollar savings) for these grade levels without  compromising the quality of the food or service.  We will continue to provide a daily menu which is balanced and meets the recommended nutritious needs of students.  Students with certain documented dietary restrictions will be allowed to opt out of the program.  These cases will be considered individually and  parents must present a written request to the Administrative Officer to begin the process.

Please note that all students in grades K through 5 are allowed to have more than one serving of soup, vegetables and meats.  If you have any questions, please contact Patricia de Marín at pmarin@cotopaxi.k12.ec

Tips for the Summer

July 2010

Dear Parents,

Do you wonder why some children seem to be able to return to school and do well academically in the fall while others struggle? Perhaps it’s because some families do things that help their children maintain the skills they have worked so hard to achieve during the school year.

You can do things to keep your child’s skills sharp, and visit places right here in Quito to help your child experience success next school year. Some families have a rule that for every minute their children watch TV, they match that time with something academic. Here are some ideas:

· Math- practice math facts for 10 minutes every day

· Reading (let your child choose! Even comic books)- have your child read for 20 minutes every day, and discuss what they have read… what surprised you?, who do the characters remind you of?, is this something that you have encountered before?… if your child is too young to read, you can read to them and ask the same questions (you can read in English or your mother tongue)

· Our school library is open from 9-12 Monday through Friday; if you’re here in Quito, please come in and check out some books!

· Our school website has resources: click on the tab “Library Media Center”, click on “links”, and then on “parents”.

· Writing- make shopping lists, keep a journal (10 min. a day, for younger students and emerging writers, don’t focus too much on spelling or      punctuation, it’s the ideas that matter more), write notes to family      members (can be email)…

· Enrichment- visit museums and places that stimulate your child’s curiosity   http://www.quito.com.ec/index.php?page=shop.browse&category_id=7&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=89&vmcchk=1&Itemid=89

· Have your child practice their typing- http://www.sense-lang.org/typing/tutor/index.php?lang=EN#

The most important thing you can do to help your child is to start some      conversations with them- listen to what they have to say and ask them     questions… you’ll have a great time learning about each other and bonding.

Above all, have a wonderful summer and we hope to see you in August!

From the High School Principal

Dear Parents,

I just want to thank you for being partners in our children’s education. Let me just add that it’s been a sincere pleasure working with you and I wish you all a relaxing and festive summer. Please also remind our young adults that an   education does not end with the last day of school and begin with the first day, but rather, that it continues all year-round throughout our lifetimes, and that it’s up to them to continue to read and think and discover the mystery and beauty all around us. See you in August!

Affectionately,

Eddie Wexler
