I spent a few minutes speaking about September 11, 2001 on Monday morning in our HS Assembly. Most members of the Senior class were one year old when this memorable day of our lives occurred. So much has changed in the world since then and is due to that day’s tragic events.
Each September 11 that has passed since then brings many memories and reflections for me and I am sure the same can be said for you. I use this day to galvanize the choice I made long before 9/11 to become a teacher. I chose teaching because I was lucky enough to have a few teachers who cared about me, helped me reflect on decisions I had made, and provided me with valuable guidance. They made a huge impact on the direction of my life. I chose teaching to help open student’s eyes to varying degrees of color and perspective, for students to develop situational awareness and empathy, for our next generation to be listeners and critical thinkers who are independent minded able to see through the noise, to be discernible consumers of information, resilient and gritty individuals who look for clues in their failures and continually learn.
9/11 crystallizes for me the importance of an international education. The student experience in classrooms, in hallways and at lunch tables provides the daily opportunities to learn from each other, share perspectives, conceptualize a world that is not hateful and isolationist, but understanding, learning and loving.
Thank you to you parents who choose, like me, this unique educational experience for our children--an international educational experience that will empower children to make our world a better place.
Finally, thank you to the educators who have chosen to help shape our student experience. Thank you for choosing to live overseas, for being lovers of learning, and for changing the world one student at a time.
