HS MAY 8

Congratulations to our swim team for this past weekend’s efforts. Well done!

First week of IB Exams went well--our students are feeling confident, accomplished and ready for more! Well done to all.

Please read the following letter about our Capstone Celebrations occurring on June 12, 13 and 14.

I hope to see you at our Piano Concert this Thursday evening, May 10 at 6:00 p.m.

Counseling Corner
Baby Think it Over
We are excited to begin our Baby Think it Over program with our 10th grade students that started on Monday May 7th. This is a research-based pregnancy prevention and healthy decision-making program provided for students in many schools in Ecuador and internationally. Parents are invited to join your students for the final workshop on Friday May 11th at 1:50pm in the Auditorium.  The workshop will be conducted in Spanish with translation to English.

This is an excellent time for parents of all grades to take the opportunity to talk with your children about the decisions they make now and how those might affect their plans for the future. It’s also a great time to tell them about your own experiences managing parenting!

Alcohol & Drug Effects on the Teenage Brain
A big thank you to our parent representatives who were instrumental in arranging for Dr. Silvia Martins to present research for our middle and high school parents on April 20th. Dr. Martins is a fellow AC parent and also a faculty member and researcher at Columbia University in Epidemiology. She shared that parents are one of the most important “protective factors” to prevent youth from engaging in binge drinking and drug use, which can impede their brain development. In fact, as Dr. Martins indicated, research shows that parenting programs are even more effective than prevention education in schools!  Please check out Dr. Martins presentation and take this opportunity to talk with your kids about the risks of drug and alcohol use.

IB Corner
IB students are in the middle of their second week of IB exams, and the AC final exams for the seniors are also starting this week. Good luck everyone!

College Counseling Corner
We are down to our final college visits!  In fact we have had 198 colleges and universities visit Academia Cotopaxi this year.  Incredible.  During lunchtime in the College Center the following universities will come to visit:
Monday: Harvey Mudd College, Scripps College, Colorado College
Wednesday: Murilo Gabrielli from the Brazilian Embassy will be discussing Brazilian University Options.

Cougar Corner
The 2017-2018 Athletics Seasons have come to an end. Season 3 closed last weekend, April 27-28, with the Copa Academia Cotopaxi Swim Meet hosted by AC and the JV Invitational Tournament hosted by Alliance Academy.

Our Swim Team closed their year with a strong performance winning in both the Girls and Boys overall scores and with a special award for María Emilia L. for being the best female swimmer in her category. Copa AC hosted 108 swimmers from 16 different schools in Quito over two days. Big thank you’s to our Swim Team Coaches, our Swim Team Parents for all of their work and support and the Officials from the Pichincha Swimming Federation who ran a very smooth tournament. We look forward to another great swimming year in 2018-2019!
