Events!

MS

After a wonderful February break, the Middle School is back and in action. House Has Talent, MS Social #3, Student Led Conferences, Fine Arts Festival, and continued amazing classroom learning all happen in the next 3 ½ weeks! Please help us ensure the success of all these happenings by reinforcing rest and healthy eating at home. Thanks!

Fine Arts Festival - We are in need of parent volunteers to lead workshops at the Fine Arts Festival. The Festival is March 8 - 9 and the MS will spend these two days participating in workshops, musical concerts, and art displays. We rely on the AC community to help make this event a success! Please click on the Workshop Sign Up link (form in Spanish)  for more information and to sign up. You do not need to be an artist to lead a workshop, and if you are looking for ideas, please let me know. Thank you!

Concert times are 1:00pm on both March 8 and 9. Band will perform on Thursday, and Orchestra on Friday.

Class Photos - On Monday, February 19th, the Yearbook will be taking class photos. These are group photos for each grade level in the Middle School. Photos are in the afternoon. Full attendance would be wonderful!

Student Led Conferences - We look forward to seeing you at Student Led Conferences on February 28. The Middle School and Elementary School will both be sending conference time sign ups and instructions this week. In the Middle School, you will receive an email from your child’s mentor teacher with a form to sign up for a twenty minute slot. During this meeting, your child will present his/her ePortfolio of learning and there will be time for conversation with the mentor teacher. This form of conference allows students the opportunity to practice presentation skills, and allows parents to engage in meaningful conversations about student learning in the Middle School.

House Has Talent - The High School house leaders are organizing the annual House Has Talent show. Auditions happen at lunch the week of February 19 - 23 (students audition based on their house) and the talent show is on March 2, at 1:30pm.

A reminder that Tuesday, February 20 is a half day for students, and a professional development afternoon for all faculty. Students are dismissed at 12:00 noon.

Celebrating Growth

ES

On Friday, February 2 you will receive your child’s first semester report cards.  I know that you will join me in celebrating your child’s growth! You will notice that report cards are written in grades PK - 2 in third person, while most teachers in grades 3 - 5 have written the narrative descriptions to the students.  In both cases, these are intended to provide parents with feedback about students’ learning.

We invite you to share the comments (more than the grades) with your children and to focus on what they CAN do!  Motivation to continue learning will come from truly celebrating their work through specific examples, encouraging trial and error, highlighting that failures lead to more learning and that we never cease to improve.  I invite you to read more about mindset and the work of Carol Dweck which has been inspiring our thoughts and interactions with children.  I’ve chosen an article that also has a 10 minute TedTalk from Dweck herself.  The Value of a Growth Mindset in Education

Parent Volunteer Opportunities at Fine Arts Festival
Fine Arts Festival - Speaking of talented adults who live in the area... we are looking for parent volunteers to lead a workshop  at the Fine Arts Festival. The Festival is March 8 - 9 and students in Kinder through 8th grade will have the opportunity to attend workshops, musical concerts, and art displays.  Parents can lead workshops and interact with our students to support creativity and wonder.  So, if you have an idea of a workshop you would like to lead, go for it!  We rely on the AC community to help make this event a success. Please click on the Workshop Sign Up link for more information and to sign up.

Talent Show.
Auditions for the AC Talent Show will take place on February 16 at 3:10 p.m.  Please note that all students participating in auditions will need to be accompanied by an adult who will represent the student or group.  There will be no school-provided supervision for either the auditions or the talent show.  We will send information regarding guidelines and registration soon.   The Talent Show will take place on March 16.

Upcoming
January 31 - 4th Grade PYP Assembly
February 2 - Report Cards will be sent home electronically
Feb. 5 - 13 - February Break
February 16 - Talent Show Auditions at 3:10 p.m.
February 20 - 12 noon dismissal for all students - Professional Development afternoon for teachers

High School News

HS

Thank you to the parents who attended today’s Student Led Conferences. I hope you noticed a big difference in how our faculty engaged with your child regarding his/her Approaches to Learning. The faculty has been working on conferencing, practicing with each other, calibrating our thinking about ATLs so we are more aligned and focus learning conversations towards a student’s growth. Thank you for your support!

I wish you all a wonderful Carnival holiday. When we return, our Seniors will have a few short weeks left prior to mock exams. The rest of our students will dig into new learning.

Counseling Corner
Vacation is a great time to slow down and have conversations with your child without the pressure of a regular work or school week. Here are some thoughts for some fun conversation starters:

  • Who is the funniest person you know? What makes them funny?
  • What’s your favorite family tradition?
  • What do you wish we did more often as a family?
  • In our family, what are the most important ways we show each other that we care about each other?
  • What are you most proud of?

College Counseling Corner
Juniors: Please sign up for the TOEFL iBT this year.  The TOEFL will be offered at The ONE Institute on March 24th.  Usually, this is not a test that requires studying, however, if you would like resources, please come see me.  The TOEFL is offered many times each month, however, I am pleased to say it is offered at The ONE Institute and I am sure their technological specifications are top notch.

MS

The Grade 6 Spanish Language Arts classes were treated to a visit by Ecuadorian author Juana Neira. The students read her book, “Mi Amiga Secreta,” and were delighted to have the opportunity to meet and converse with the author (smiling faces evident in the above photo!).

Fine Arts Festival
Speaking of talented adults who live in the area... we are looking for parent volunteers to lead a workshop  at the Fine Arts Festival. The Festival is March 8 - 9 and the MS will spend these two days participating in workshops, musical concerts, and art displays. We rely on the AC community to help make this event a success! Please click on the Workshop Sign Up link for more information and to sign up. Thank you!

MAP Testing
The second round of Middle School MAP testing takes place this week, January 30, 31, and February 1. Please help ensure that your child is at school and especially well rested on these days. MAP test results will be distributed at Student Led Conferences.

Report Cards
First semester report cards will be available on Friday, February 2. Paper reports will be sent home with your child(ren) on Friday and are also available online via Skyward.

Student Led Conferences
Student Led Conferences are on the horizon for February 28. The Middle School and Elementary School will both be sending conference time sign ups and instructions after February 14.

Athletics
This week our Boys and Girls Soccer teams will travel to Colegio Menor on Wednesday for their 4th game of the season. Basketball and Soccer practices continue as scheduled.

The upcoming break may be a perfect time to connect with your child(ren) about what is going on in their academic lives. Ask for a tour of Edmodo to see all class work, or a sneak preview of the ePortfolio.

I hope you enjoy the upcoming break and Carnival holiday.

Student Led Conferences

HS

Next Tuesday, January 30, we will host our Student Led Conferences, we hope you are able to attend. Specialist teachers: Art, Music (Piano, Band, Orchestra), Design Tech, Computer Science, Graphic Design, Health and Physical Education teachers will be in the Learning Commons. Core course teachers: Economics, Math, Spanish, English, Social Studies and Sciences will be in their classrooms. If a conference is going on in a classroom or the Learning Commons, please wait a few minutes in order to speak to that teacher, or move onto a different teacher and return at a later time.

Students have reflected on their goals from Semester I. Many students have been successful in completing their Semester I goal, others have re-written a goal to make it more accessible. We have asked all students to provide evidence for their next goals, defining in which area they now need to turn their attention. Evidence may take the form of feedback from a teacher on a rubric, an essay, lab report, etc. in which your child would like to improve.

Our role during the SLC, both parents and teachers, is to listen and ask probing questions which require your child to think. Silence is a powerful motivator to provoke thinking and communication.

Please familiarize yourself with our Approaches to Learning (ATL) rubric. Much of our conversation on Tuesday will focus on how your child’s ATLs have developed during first semester and in which areas they should now focus. Again, we want our students and your child to be reflective here, he/she should be able to identify their strengths and areas of growth.

Our focus on ATL’s is clearly where education is headed for our next generation. With so much information being readily accessible by all, your child’s approach to learning will help define his/her ability to interact with that information in responsible, caring and creative ways.

Conferences will run from 8:00 a.m. until 3:45 p.m. We look forward to conferencing with your child.

Counseling Corner
Students in 9th-11th grades have been working on their course selections for next year. Please come see me during conferences or make an appointment if you would like to discuss your student’s path toward graduation.

FCD Follow-up: Check out this video that speaks about countries that allow earlier drinking ages, and the idea of an adolescent learning to drink.

IB Corner
Full IB Diploma candidates in grade 11 have started ToK and the EE this semester. Good luck to all of them as they are on this challenging academic track!

Cougar’s Corner
Athletics Teams have a busy week ahead. Our Varsity Teams will be playing at Menor for the QISSA Semi-Final round on Monday. On Tuesday morning, our Varsity Boys Basketball Team is heading to the CAISSA Tournament hosted by ISPS in Trinidad. The tournament runs from Wednesday to Saturday. Athletes will return on Sunday the 28th. On Tuesday, it is the turn of our JV Boys Basketball Team to play in the QISSA Semi-Finals. They are traveling to Alliance with the hope of securing a spot in the finals.

End of First Semester

MS

This marks the last week of Semester 1 for school year 2017-18. Thank you to everyone who has helped transition those of us who are new to AC this year - the AC community is incredibly welcoming and supportive. I know that we all feel privileged to be working together to help fulfill the Academia Cotopaxi mission.

I hope you are all staying healthy! In addition to taking advantage of the flu shot, it is important to help your children remember to stay hydrated, eat several servings of fruits and vegetables each day, and get enough sleep. The hour before bedtime is especially important for children (and all of us) to relax and begin to quiet the mind for a restful sleep.

Important reminders
The Middle School first semester ends on Friday, January 26. Report cards will be available after February 2. Student schedules generally stay nearly the same from one semester to the next, with the exception of a change in some elective classes. If you have any questions about your child’s schedule, please contact me or Aubrey Jordan.

The second round of Middle School MAP testing takes place January 30, 31, and February 1. Please note this on your calendar and help ensure that your child is at school and especially well rested on these days. MAP test results will be distributed at Student Led Conferences on February 28.

The end of the year will come quickly, and it is not too early to begin thinking about the way in which we would like to farewell the Grade 8’s as they move on from Middle School. If you are interested in being part of a small committee to plan this event, please let me know.

With kind regards,

Connecting with the Outdoors

ES

Congratulations to our fourth graders who will be participating in their first overnight trip!

I would like to invite you to make an “outdoors plan” with your children.  Over and over again, students share with us how they engage with devices and television at home.  Fewer and fewer times, they are sharing that they play outside or interact with nature.  Connecting with the outdoors is extremely powerful for children and supports their development in incredible ways.  Outdoor activity also supports the building and strengthening of relationships.

Your homeroom teachers send periodic information home regarding the units of study (PYP), academic learning targets and classroom activities.  We ask that you read these communications and look for connections to the learning at home.  Also, if you have any feedback or questions, do not hesitate to contact your teachers.

February 2 - Report Cards will be sent home electronically

Next Tuesday is our first semester awards assembly – 1:45 p.m. in the auditorium.
This is an opportunity to celebrate the various skills and talents that our student body is developing--Academic success, Community Service progress and Activity leadership will be recognized. Congratulations to each student who is growing and developing as a community member.

I would like to ask all students to make very sure you are wearing your school uniform. If you do not wear it, you will not be allowed to receive your award on stage, but rather in the office once you are in uniform. Thank you parents for helping us ensure your child is representing our school in our uniform.

January is the month for students to make course choices for next school year. In February we will input all of the information in order to build the schedule. Please sit down with your child to ensure informed decisions are made. Ms. Keyes, Mr. Wasser, Mr. Bordaguibel and I are available to answer any questions you may have.
