Elementary School PYP

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme is a curriculum framework designed for students in our Grades PK – 5 Program. It prepares students for the intellectual challenges of further education and their future careers, focusing on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside.

PYP develops students’ academic, social and emotional well being, focusing on international-mindedness and strong personal values. The PYP nurtures independent learning skills, encouraging every student to take responsibility for their learning.

The programme incorporates local and global issues into the curriculum, asking students to look at six related, transdisciplinary themes and to consider the links between them. The themes include ‘who we are’, ‘where we are in place and time’, ‘how we express ourselves’, ‘how the world works’, ‘how we organize ourselves’ and ‘sharing the planet’.

Other main components of the PYP are:

  • Teachers and students use key questions that are concept-based to structure the units of inquiry;
  • Students acquire and apply transdisciplinary skills while developing an understanding of these important concepts;
  • Curriculum is also developed using local resources and is customized for each school’s unique learning situation;
  • Developing caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect;
  • Learner profile attributes that list the behaviors that the program intends to develop in all children of all cultures and supports children becoming: inquirers, thinkers, communicators, risk-takers, knowledgeable, principled, caring, open-minded, balanced and reflective;
  • Valid and varied assessment provides feedback on the learning process, encourages both student and teacher self-assessment and reflection. These include rubrics, anecdotal records, checklists, benchmarks, continuums and portfolios of work.
