MS Jun 11

There is always so much to be grateful for at the end of a school year. I believe the Battle Bot photo above is a wonderful symbol of our year in Middle School - a sunny day, joyful students, celebrating learning in a real life situation, the entire MS cheering their peers, a true Middle School event. We have had many of these events during the course of school year 2018-19. The Middle School has grown and become incredibly cohesive, with much to celebrate, including our new uniquely MS schedule. Much of what teachers do happens behind the scenes, and students are the beneficiaries via their classroom learning experiences. I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank the MS faculty - their dedication to your child’s learning is incredible. You are very fortunate parents. I would also like to thank you, parents, for your support of the MS program. The home/school partnership is critical to our success in educating the whole child. We have a full week ahead, and will spend it celebrating 2018-19, and preparing for 2019-20!

Counselor’s Corner
It has been another incredible year working with Faculty, Administration, and all of your children to create this special Middle School Culture. You can feel the good energy and warmth while walking down the halls of our little corner of AC. We wrapped up our Cougar Time lessons this year with Leadership and Growth Mindset, reflecting back on the year while also looking forward. I am excited to see where this next school year takes us. Thank you all for your honesty and trust in working with your children. It is an honor to be a part of each student’s (and parent’s) Middle School journey. I hope the summer months leave everyone rested and revitalized for 2019-20!!

Grade 8 Moving On Celebration
The Grade 8 Moving On Celebration on Wednesday, June 12, will begin at 1:00 p.m. in the auditorium and the afternoon will end with a reception at 3:00 p.m. Although the event is not formal, we do ask that students “dress up”. Slacks, collared shirts, skirts, simple dresses, are all appropriate. Please help your child make a good outfit decision on Wednesday. Thank you. Please contact this MS Office if you have any questions about the event.

Special Events
Monday - Class awards assembly
Tuesday - Field day
Wednesday - Grade 8 Moving on Celebration
Friday - Noon dismissal

Have a wonderful summer holiday and I hope to see you on campus this week!

With kind regards,

So the last week of school has arrived! I am sure you are as proud as we are to celebrate all the growth that has happened this year.  Your children have not only grown academically, but they have also grown from their experiences with their peers, and have gained skills as inquirers, problem solvers, creators, and agents of change. At our end of school assembly, we will highlight each grade level telling a short story of agency.  When children are empowered, feel confident, and develop understanding, they take action and this summer, we invite you to continue the conversations that our fifth graders charged us with during their exhibition: What problem do you care about and how can you make a difference?

Please note that report cards will be ready on Friday, June 14. These will be posted on Skyward and you will receive a reminder with directions of how to access these.  So, please take a moment and read the reports with your children.  These summative narratives provide closure for this school year and you can connect these with the posts that your child has on their personal SeeSaw portfolio.

We want to send a special message to the families who will move to a different location this year:  Thank you for having shared a part of your life with the Cotopaxi community.  Each student brings a special story and those stories contribute to our culture, making us more diverse, better informed and stronger.  May the next experiences bring your family much joy. Keep in touch with your friends and know that you can always reach out to us and come back to visit!

Inquiry Corner

Grade 1 students will showcase their Learn at our PYP Assembly, June 11. They have been inquiring into how people can get their needs met or how we can help others to get their needs met. After learning of the problem of homelessness here in Quito from their Grade 5 buddies, Grade 1 decided to take action in the hopes of making a positive impact. They have decided to raise money to meet some of their basic needs by holding a fundraising fair after the assembly. We invite you to have conversations with your children about what actions we each take that supports other’s needs.

We carried out our last inspiration project showcase for grades 3-5 last school week. Four years ago, we moved away from traditional homework practices and included inspiration project development as part of our home learning program. Students use the design cycle to inquire into a problem, look for a solution and carry out steps by responding to questions and mapping out their project to showcase.  We want to thank parents for providing expertise, for extending children’s skills, and for celebrating authentic learning. During the summer, we invite you to continue to support your child to inquire about how to support society or the environment, then capture and develop their inspirations together. Here are the forms we use during the school year which you can use as a guide in the summer:

As we reach the last days of school, students will be involved in closure activities in their classrooms.  These include transition activities in preparation for the next school year and also getting their class and resources respectfully organized for the students who will enjoy learning in their space next year. Involving students in packing and organizing supports closure, gives them a sense of responsibility.

Every year, we collect used backpacks, lunchboxes and school supplies for children in schools with low resources. You can send your donations through June 14 to the Elementary office.

Inquiry Corner
The PYP ensures to celebrate learning throughout. At this time of year take advantage to carefully watch, listen, and participate with your child about what concepts they have learned, what skills are they practicing, and what areas of Learner Profile your child exemplifies.

MS Jun 4

We were treated to a wonderful week of performances last week. Congratulations again to our Band, Choir, and Drama families! The final MS Social on Friday was also a successful event. Socializing in a safe, healthy way is very important for Middle School age students and the MS Socials are a part of what we do at AC to help educate the whole child.

On Wednesday the entire school will celebrate our HS seniors by attending Senior Roll Call. This is one of the benefits of being part of a small school community, we can all be there to wish our departing seniors a final farewell. We will have regular, shortened, MS classes in the morning, attend Senior Roll Call, and then students have a noon dismissal and faculty has one final professional development afternoon.

Grade 8 Moving On Celebration
All Grade 8 parents have received an email with details about the Grade 8 Moving On Celebration on Wednesday, June 12. The celebration will begin at 1:00 p.m. in the auditorium and the afternoon will end with a reception at 3:00 p.m. Please contact the MS Office if you have questions.

MS Awards
Following the AC tradition, the Middle School school year ends with a few award categories. Class Awards will be given on Monday, June 10. Presidential and other special awards will be given on Wednesday, June 12. If your child is receiving a class award or special award, you will be notified this week with an invitation to attend the event.

With kind regards,
