Outdoor & Experiential Education

A group of people, likely students or volunteers, are working together to tend to a small garden or planter box in an urban setting, with buildings and trees visible in the background.

Learning Through Experience, Exploration, Challenge, and Reflection

At Academia Cotopaxi, outdoor and experiential education is a cornerstone of our mission to nurture curious, compassionate, and capable learners. We believe that students learn best when they are actively engaged in meaningful, real-world experiences that deepen understanding, strengthen relationships, and inspire personal growth.

Our approach draws on the work of educational pioneers such as Jean Piaget, John Dewey, and Kurt Hahn, whose philosophies continue to influence global best practices in experiential learning. Their ideas support our belief that learning should be hands-on, reflective, connected to authentic contexts, and intentionally designed to build character and agency.

Outdoor learning at AC is not an “add-on”—it is an essential part of developing students who think critically, act ethically, and work to improve the world around them.

A Transformative Educational Mission

At Academia Cotopaxi, our goal is not simply to prepare students to fit into the world as it exists today. Instead, we aim to empower them to understand it deeply and shape it for the better. Experiential and outdoor education play a critical role in this mission, helping students become thoughtful, engaged global citizens capable of contributing to local and global communities.

Our Pedagogical Foundations

Experience + reflection equals powerful learning. Our programs connect education to real-life contexts, encouraging inquiry and thoughtful debriefing.

Our Curricular Approach to Outdoor & Experiential Learning

Our experiential learning model is intentionally designed from 12 months through Grade 12. Through carefully curated programming, students:

  • Build knowledge through meaningful, real-world experiences

  • Strengthen relationships and develop strong cohort identities

  • Engage in reflection that sparks personal insight and growth

  • Explore Ecuador’s natural environments, biodiversity, and cultural richness

  • Develop essential life skills such as collaboration, leadership, and resilience

Central to this work is our signature program:

Discover Ecuador: A Journey from Early Years to High School

Discover Ecuador is the heart of our outdoor and experiential education program—a progressive, developmentally aligned series of experiences across all grade levels that immerse students in the landscapes, cultures, and communities of Ecuador.

Early Years

A person with blonde hair is holding a gardening tool and examining a lush, blooming garden with yellow flowers in the foreground, surrounded by a wooden structure in the background.

Young learners explore Ecuador through joyful day trips that connect them with nature and local culture. These experiences spark curiosity, build confidence, and nurture a sense of wonder about the world around them.

Elementary

A raised garden bed filled with various vegetables and plants, surrounded by a group of people, with a building and trees visible in the background.

Elementary students deepen their connection to place through day trips and first overnight experiences. They link classroom learning to real-world environments, strengthening independence, collaboration, and a growing awareness of impact.

Middle School

Middle Schoolers take multi-day expeditions across Ecuador’s diverse regions. Through shared challenges and outdoor exploration, they build resilience, teamwork, and a deeper understanding of themselves and others.

High School

High School experiences expand students’ leadership and real-world skills. Each journey immerses them in Ecuador’s biodiversity and communities, preparing them to lead meaningful lives with confidence and purpose.
