Bonne année 2019 à toutes et à tous. I wish you all a fantastic year, with health, happiness and learning!

In the High School, January is also the month of planning for the following school year. First step is to ask our students the courses that they want to enroll in for August 2019. So, as you see the 2019-2020 option forms arriving your way I encourage you all to have conversations at home and with us at school.

Semester 1 report cards
The semester 1 report cards are now available to students and parents on Skyward. For students who still have make up exams to complete this week, the report cards will not be accurate as we need the exam results factored. Once it is done, I will individual families know when they can review the up-to-date report cards.

College Counseling
Our AC Seniors are receiving university acceptances from amazing places!  As of Dec 19, the latest acceptances are from: Stanford University, Emory University, Trinity University, Eckerd College, College of William & Mary, University of Denver, Baylor University, Pace University, Heidelberg University, Lawrence University, Southern Methodist University, University of Arizona, HULT International School of Business & Nova Southeastern University (USA) IE University (Spain); Webster University (Austria); and Ryerson University & St. Thomas University (Canada).  Scholarships awarded to date are $972,000. A very happy 2019 to you, from the entire Middle School! I hope you enjoyed a wonderful break and are rested and refreshed. The MS returns to finish semester one. Our first day of semester two begins on January 28. This means that during the next few weeks you may see your child completing final projects and reviewing for summative assessments.

MAP Testing
The second round of MAP testing will take place the week of January 21. All students will test on the Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, with Thursday and Friday reserved for make-ups. No make-up tests will be given after Friday, January 25. Please note this week on your calendar and help ensure that your child comes to school prepared for MAP - having had a good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast!

Tuesday, January 15 is a professional development afternoon for faculty, and thus a half day for students, with dismissal at 12:00pm.

I look forward to seeing all of you at the PTSA Bingo night on January 18th!

During the break, I know that you have enjoyed time with your children, have been marveled with their talents, with their growth and have enjoyed their laughter and their unconditional love for you... and are probably feeling pretty grateful for all the blessings in your life. We are certainly feeling grateful for the amazing opportunity that you give us to learn with your children.  Each one of our students brings a personal story of childhood that inspires us.

You have probably already received many beautiful wishes for a 2019 year filled with happiness, and we also want to send ours to each of our families.  Enjoy every moment and may your 2019 resolutions be focused on health, family and love.

This week, 5th graders will begin to take work to do at home.  This more formal approach to home-learning will support their transition into MS where research shows that there is a positive correlation between homework and student performance.  Because this correlation has proven to be minimal in elementary grades, we moved away from traditional homework four years ago.  Inspiration projects (see inquiry corner below) are intended to support home learning for younger students where they use their understanding and skills to solve, create and showcase.

Here are some important events coming up:
January 10, 2019 - Visitors from Melbourne University’s, Australia-Latin America Training Academy (ALATA) will visit our division to learn about our approach to inclusion.  ALATA is working with the Ecuadorian government to provide training for inclusive practices in the public school sector.

January 10, 2019 - PTSA meeting - all parents are invited at 2 p.m. We will not hold a parent rep meeting for elementary this month.  We will hold our regular meeting in February.

January 11, 2019 - Sweet morning charities from 7:30 to 8 a.m. in the HS Cafeteria - all members are invited to stop by this student-led coffee shop that runs every Friday.  Profits are use to support projects by Fundacion Reina de Quito that works with children with Down Syndrome.

January 14-18, 2019 - MAP Testing for grades 3 - 5

January 15, 2019 - Professional Development Day - Half-Day for students, with dismissal at noon.

January 17, 2019 - Inspiration Projects Showcase - 8:15 a.m.

January 18, 2019 - PK & K Pajama Day

Inquiry Corner
Welcome back, and may this 2019 be filled with learning! An integral part of Inquiry is finding our personal passions and following up on them.  Children at AC follow the design cycle to create projects based on their passions.  You can support your child by:

1. What interests do you have?  What problems do you want to solve?
2. How does this passion impact yourself, the community, the world?
3. Research, learn, ask, take notes.
4. Experiment, try, create
5. Evaluate and reflect

Inquiry Corner
A conceptual understanding that we strive to develop at AC is human commonalities and how these make each of us unique.  I asked a handful of people from our school  what the holiday season means to them:
PK - “Yo les ayudo, a mi mamá y mi papá, a hacer unos bombillos,  el arbolito.  A mi me significa tener regalos de Papá Noel.”
Grade 2 - “HAPPY… Because you can have fun with family and eat yummy food!”
Grade 4 - “A place to have a break from school, and be with your family.  Because it is important to spend time with family, I get a warm feeling in my heart when we are all together.”
Teacher - “It is a time to enjoy being with family, celebrating and cherishing time we have together.

Enjoy this Holiday Season with your family and friends!

I hope that everyone has had a nice long weekend celebrating fiestas de Quito. Now, we have 4 days to be reviewing in class, in study support and at home before the start of the exams on Friday morning. Let’s have a strong finish for this semester 1.

Exam schedule
Here is the exam schedule. We are starting on Friday morning. Please note that Friday is also a half day.

Use of school facilities
Reminder: the use of our school facilities. For security, no student can be in school outside of the school hours. Please review the extract of the handbook:
Students may be on campus outside of school hours ONLY if they are participating in a supervised activity, working directly with a member of the AC staff, or are in a supervised area (such as the Library or the HS Learning Commons). Students may not use the sports facilities, including the soccer fields and basketball courts, without adult supervision

High School Counseling
December can be a stressful month for students as they prepare for exams. This is a great opportunity to sit down with your students to go over their study plan with them (How will they organize their time?  How will they limit distractions while studying? Do they have questions for specific teachers and need to attend some after school sessions or set up a meeting with a teacher?). Breaks and rest are also very important to recharge and allow the brain to store what they have learned. If you see that your son or daughter is having a particularly hard time feel free to contact Ms. Keyes for some extra support.

College Counseling
12th grade parents: December 17th is the last day that the College Counseling Office will be giving feedback on essays and supplemental essays that are due for U.S. university applications that are due from January 1st to January 7th.

HS Athletics
QISSA Season 1 has come to an end and this week our athletes are trying out for their Season 2 sports. The offerings for Season 2 are:
-    Basketball for boys and girls
-    Swimming for boys and girls
-    Soccer for boys
We have two CAISSA Tournaments this semester:
-CAISSA Soccer Tournament in Dominican Republic from January 30 to February 3.
-CAISSA Basketball Tournament in Quito from March 27 to March 31.

Thank you!

Fiestas de Quito in the Middle School was a resounding success! The MS Spanish department was willing to try something new, and we were rewarded with a fun and festive afternoon. We all played traditional games from Quito and sampled special foods that accompany many Quito Days festivities. This way of celebrating Quito was very appropriate for the MS division. Students and parents alike were full of smiles and actively participating in Quito traditions. Thank you to our parent volunteers and the MS Spanish department!

Counselor’s Corner
Over the past month in Cougar Time, we have been working on our Understanding Bullying Unit. We covered definitions of bullying including differences between peer conflict, teasing and bullying, ways to support the target of bullying, and what to say and/or do when feeling bullied. We wrapped up the unit with students looking for effective and constructive solutions to prevent and address bullying. In their mentor groups, students created and submitted proposals for new ideas or campaigns which could be implemented in the Middle School. I will be going through all of the proposals to see how our students can have more of a voice and active role in promoting a safe and respectful environment for all.

This full week of learning culminates with a half day for students on Friday. Teachers will spend the afternoon working with their departments on school-wide curriculum goals.

With kind regards,
Sheryl

Two weeks before December/January break… What a wonderful time of the year this is!  The innocence of childhood combined with the beauty of our internationally minded community brings a great opportunity for your families to connect with your own traditions and learn about the traditions of others.

In the spirit of the holidays, we highlight the power of positive words.  We invite you to join our Gift of Words campaign which will begin on Monday, December 17 through December 20.  Stop by our office and leave your positive thoughts.  You can also send us your positive thoughts and we will display these.  You can send these to Nardy Reinoso at nreinoso@cotopaxi.k12.ec with the subject “Gift of Words.”

At home, catch your children doing things that are commendable and slip them little notes of appreciation with drawings for little ones and specific written comments for older ones.  Celebrate your children for things like putting their things away, giving you a hug spontaneously, helping to bring in groceries, using kind words with others, putting on their seat belts, using manners at the table, smiling at grandparents, remembering to brush their teeth, reading daily, bringing joy to your family… so many celebratory possibilities.

So, let’s light up this season with kindness!

Please remember that there is a half-day on December 14.  Our teachers and assistants will engage in continued curriculum alignment work focusing on assessments and how these support our students’ learning.

Inquiry Corner
IBO describes being CARING when “we show empathy, compassion and respect. We have a commitment to service, and we act to make a positive difference in the lives of others and in the world around us.” What actions could we take every day to practice being Caring?
